Notify.domains vs WhoisFreaks
Founder, Notify.domains · ex-GoDaddy Director of Education · founder, DomainSherpa & DNAcademy
WhoisFreaks Domain Monitoring promises "WHOIS change alerts in under 10 minutes." It watches the registrant, registrar, nameservers, status, and expiry date across 1,529 extensions, and it says you can add domains you do not own. Paid plans check as often as every 10 minutes. It follows a name through expired, redemption, deleted, dropped, and re-registered. You can exclude noisy fields and export the history. Alerts arrive by email.
A taken name changes in three places. The registry record is one. The website is another. The third is the aftermarket: a Sedo listing, a GoDaddy auction, a price cut on Atom. Many of the chances to buy a name show up in that third place, and none of them touch the WHOIS record. WhoisFreaks lists a use case called "Drop and Aftermarket Acquisition" but names no auction house or marketplace. Notify.domains watches all three places.
Which one to use
Choose WhoisFreaks if
The registration record is all you need and you want it checked every 10 minutes. Or you want one name watched free at daily checks. It also sells WHOIS, DNS, and SSL APIs, plus separate brand and registrant monitors, if you are building your own tooling.
Choose Notify.domains if
You want to buy the name, not audit it. You want to hear about the listing, the auction, the price cut, and the site going dark, not just the record. And you want the alert to tell you whether a registrant change was a real owner change, a privacy service toggling, or a drop-catch service's placeholder.

What the record shows, and what it does not
The record is good at a few things. It tells you when the expiry date moved, which means the owner renewed. It tells you when the status flipped to redemption or pending delete. It tells you when the registrar changed, which can mean a transfer or a sale. WhoisFreaks catches those quickly and lets you filter the fields you do not care about.
It is silent on most of the ways a buyer actually gets a name. An owner can list a domain on Sedo, Atom, Spaceship, and GoDaddy's marketplace without the record changing at all. An expired name can sit in a GoDaddy auction for weeks with the record unchanged. A price can drop 40 percent overnight. Domain auction alerts lists the venues we watch and what each alert includes.
Not every registrant change is a sale
Registrant fields churn. A privacy service turns on or off. A registrar rewrites the contact format. A drop-catch service registers the name and puts its own placeholder in the record before handing it to the winner. Each of those is a WHOIS change. Only some of them mean the name has a new owner.
Notify.domains labels the difference in the alert, so a privacy toggle reads as a privacy toggle and a drop-catch placeholder reads as a caught drop. Why did I not get the domain explains what a caught drop looks like from the outside.
